Alright, I'm not here to upset all you ska/punk lovin' kids, but this week, well, this week I have a laid back episode for you. If it's not your thing, I get it, but damn, are these songs smooth as hell. When I think of ska I think of it as an inherently cool genre, and it's these kinds of songs that make me think that. If this kind of ska doesn't do it for you, I feel sorry for ya son. And for all those that get it, man, I wanna give you all a dozen low fives.

00:00 - the Fuss (DC) - We're Going Out (We're Going Out / Dangerous Love '17)

Woo hoo! It's my birthday today (that is, if you're listening to this on May 25th) and that mean, Imma gonna play, whatever the hell I want. Sure, you may think I do that every week, and that's mostly true, but I'm also looking to play stuff that I think you, my listeners, will enjoy. I go out looking for new and exciting bands to play for you. This week, nah, I just gathered up a load of great tracks that I want to listen to, if you don't like it, eh, you got no taste. Sorry, buddy, but this stuff here is still the real deal, if you're not down, scram. Ok... I may've started celebratory drinks a bit too early...

Here's was I was originally cooking up last week! A whole episode chock full of classic ska. I really can't believe that I haven't played most of these before. I know some of the mastering of these songs is a little shoddy, and even bought some new ones because the transfer is so much better on comps that came out a few years ago vs. the comps I bought back in the '90s. This is the roots, this is the good stuff, hope you enjoy!

00:00 - Millie - Oh, Henry (Sweet William / Oh, Henry '64)
01:49 - Derrick Morgan - Do the Beng Beng (Do the Beng Beng / Revenge '68)

Ok, well, this week's episode wasn't supposed to be this week's episode. I don't know when I was going to make an episode like this next, but it wasn't in my plans. Then the Pomps had to go and release a new and fantastic EP last week and inspire this! Next week I'll get back with the plan, but this week... this week had to come NOW!

To tell the truth, I really never thought about doing an episode focused in on a single city before. And while I’m sure Boston isn’t the only city in the world that could produce such a solid episode, it’s the first one that came to my mind. Heck, I got the idea a few weeks ago and then did nothing but basically research which Big D and Bosstones songs I’d played before (to make sure I didn’t repeat any) until I sat down this afternoon, and it came so easy. Boston, thanks for being such a good town for ska music! (Also, the number of times I typed Bosstone when I meant to type Boston is far too high!)

00:00 – Big D & the Kids Table – Steady Riot (Strickly Rude ’07)
02:33 – Pressure Cooker – Don’t Mind Waiting (Wherever You Go ’12)
05:49 -Jaya the Cat – Sirens Wail (O’Farrell ’13)
07:51 – Westbound Train – a New Hope (Five to Two ’05)
10:35 – the Pomps – How to Lure People (Indie Rock is Dying ’16)
13:57 – Bim Skala Bim – Everybody’s got Their Style (Chet’s Last Call ’13)
16:55 – the Allstonians – Fear & Loathing in Allston (Bottoms Up! ’03)
19:29 – the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – They Came to Boston (More Noise & Other Disturbances ’91)

Some of these songs I've been trying to fit in for awhile. Some for months, some for weeks, some I just found and was wondering when I'd use them. And then there's the last song on this episode, I've been wanting to use it for years, but it was usually just too short or too long to work, so I'm pretty happy I got it in! Sometimes things just fit together in unexpected ways. It's best to flow with the chaos, as it can surprise you if you let it.

00:00 - the Skalcoholiks – Press Your Luck (“Look at All this Junkfood…” ’98)
03:11 - And the Wasters – Lion’s Share (State of Repairs ’17)
06:59 - Cynimatics – Much Quite More (a Life that’s Always the Same ’17)
09:06 - Jungleproof – Not Tonight (Make Up Your Mind ’16)
11:28 - Randy Woods Band – One Man Dynamo (Randy Woods Band ’17)
14:43 - Call Me Malcolm – Killing Spree (Killing Spree ’16)
17:57 - Bomb the Music Industry! – It Ceases to be “Whining” if You’re Still “Shitting Blood” (Album Minus Band ’05)
20:18 - Suburban Rhythm – Gameshow (Almost There ’94)

This episode is a bit all over the place, so, in a sense, it's the perfect 23min of Ska episode. We have ska from all around the world, some of it played a bit more traditional than not. Some bands take it in a jazzy direction, others in a punky direction. Does it still have that ska beat? You bet your ass it does! This is still 23min of Ska, not 23min of Whatever the Hell Kinda Music!

00:00 - Put3Ska - Manila Girl (Put3Ska '94)
02:51 - Rude King - Save it for Never (Coming Back to You '15)
07:01 - the Interrupters - Jenny Drinks (Say it Out Loud '16)
09:49 - Dr. Ring-Ding & the Senior Allstars - My Sound (Ram Di Dance '97)
13:07 - Rotterdam Ska-Jazz Foundation - Road to Kingston (Shake Your Foundation '03)
17:42 - the Pietasters - Mellow Mood (Turbo '02)
19:54 - the Delirians - el Gigante (Musical Remedy / el Gigante '11)
