When you're home a bit more, and you have more time to think about your hobbies... and then you think "Hey, let's do that follow up episode that you teased moths ago!" And in my silly way, I figured that this would be the best place for it. So yeah, it's the "rude girl" episode... no, not all the music is performed by women, but it's more about the song name, much like the the "rude boy" episode was. So enjoy it rude ones, it's for you!

00:00 - the Skallions - Rude Boys and Girls (Skallion Battalion '20)
03:06 - Sally and the Monkeys - Ruder Than You (Monkey Business '20)
05:39 - Skolers - Rude Girl (American Skathic comp '94)
07:41 - Lone Raspberry - Rude Girl (slow) (Children of the Horn '96)
09:59 - Juantxo Skalari & la Rude Band - Rudi Not Dead (RUDI RECORDS '14)
14:20 - Undercover S.K.A. - Rude Girl (We've Come for Your Daughter '95)
18:44 - the Doped Up Dollies - the Rude (the New Way Out '14)

It’s my birthday early next week, so I thought I’d dig around in my records crate and pull out some tracks for an all vinyl episode of 23min of ska. Some of these tracks were later put out digitally, but I don’t have them. So yeah, there’s some clicks and pops and other random record sounds, this is mainly because I do only a small clean up of the music after the transfer. This is because I dig those little imperfections that come with vinyl and I don’t really want to remove that from the final product.

00:00 – the Mighty Mighty Bosstones – I won’t Go Out Like That (What the World Needs Now is Love ’17)
03:24 – Alex Desert & Greg Lee with Western Standard Time – All of Me (All of Me / Free Form ’15)
05:41 – Johnny Too Bad & the Strikeouts – St. Paul St. (Johnny Too Bad & the Strikeouts ’96)
08:35 – Blue Beat Makers – You’ve Been So Nice (You’ve Been So Nice / My Own Way ’14)
11:31 – the Snails – Washington Bullets (I Saved the Snails ’14)
13:55 – Crazy Baldhead – Cutback! (Occupy! ’12)
16:44 – the Kinky Coo Coo’s – Get Ready (Tons of Fun ’11)
19:51 – the Far East – Can We Make it Up (Can We Make it Up / Release Me ’16)

So in "Trucker Slang / CB Slang" the term "Starving the Bears" means to go the speed limit so that the cops won't pull you over and give you a ticket. And slowing down a bit seems like not too terrible of an idea right now. We're all in a rush to get back out into the world, but maybe we should take a minute to pause and see if that's the best idea. All but one of these tracks has been released since we've been in quarantine, hell, some were written and recorded directly because of it! I can't wait for this lockdown to end, but I don't mind waiting a bit longer if it means not feeding the bear.

00:00 - the Bar Stool Preachers - State of Emergency (Soundtrack to Your Apocalypse '20)

So each year, a few friends of mine celebrate "Johnny Socko Day" which is on May 6th, so this podcast, unfortunately, misses the silliness by a day. Basically, all we do is make Socko references to each other on social media and listen to Johnny Socko while we do our day jobs, you know some real corny goofball stuff. Anyway, I decided to make this episode of 23min of Ska in the same Socko celebration spirit! This is an episode that is chock full of Indiana's finest ska and ska/punk bands, from way back when to the present day. So put on a pair of comfortable shoes, cut a rug and be the freakiest freak on the dancefloor!

00:00 - Johnny Socko - If I didn't Have a Girlfriend (live) (Triple Live '02)
02:50 - the Operators - Hybrid Moments (Hybrid Moments '20)
04:55 - Pro Midgit Mafia - Babydoll (the Beat Inside My Head '97)

Session : Eightteen // Episode : 407 // Airdate : April 30th, 2020

About the Tracks:
Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors - This Machine Kills Centrists
Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors are an interesting project that tends to play punk-influenced folk and rock music, but has been known to pull influences from all over the map ranging from swing to ska, to country and beyond. They pulled yours truly into play trombone on this record and it's one of my favorite projects I've been a part of. Their new album, "Myths, Conspiracy Theories and Other Things I Made Up to Sound Interesting" dropped last week, and it even had a ska song on it, lamenting an all too familiar attitude in our political discourse.

The Autocratics - Brainwashed Friend
The Autocratics, from Tokyo, Japan, are what would happen if you took bands like Bad Manners, Madness, and the Specials further refined that nutty two tone sound to its apex. Fronted by Shuhei Yokota (Rude Bones), The Autocratics have been carrying the two tone torch in Japan for over a decade now and have developed quite a fanbase, and yet remain one of ska's best-kept secrets. So grab your Fred Perry, crack open an ice-cold Stella and enjoy The Autocratics!!! Brainwashed Friends is my favorite track off the band's debut album.

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Perfect Future
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is, for lack of a better description, perfect. My favorite band by about a mile and a half, having been together for over 30 years they've got a catalog deeper than the Marianas Trench. The band's trademark of blending ska with just about anything you can think of and making it their own is evident on this track, the leadoff/title track of 2009's "Perfect Future "

Karikatura - White Lies
The quick way to describe Karikatura is to say they play trans-global soul or world indie. A deeper inspection, however, yields a dizzying array of sounds ranging from jazz to cumbia to reggae to funk and of course the aforementioned soul. Crisscrossing the world for over 10 years, they dropped this aggressive meringue track, White Lies, as a response to the Eric Garner murder and Black Lives Matter movement. Diverse and eclectic music with (a) soul.

Warsaw Poland Brothers - Summer of Ska
Warsaw Poland Brothers are the unsung heroes of the socal/southwest ska scene. Having been active for over 30 years, and forming 2 sub-bands (California Celts, Kalifornia Krauts) they have managed to carve out a cult following from coast to coast. Great songwriting and excellent musicianship from the Poland brothers (Chris and Aaron). Summer of Ska is a single off the as of yet unreleased 8th album! The perfect track to get you ready for summer, even if we're all stuck indoors. Catch these guys if you ever get the chance and wish their singer Chris a happy 50th Birthday!

About Chris:
Chris Malone is a busy guy. Having been playing trombone in ska bands from all over the NYC/Long Island area for over 20 years, he is currently the bandleader/singer/trombonist in NYC based ska-punk band The Pandemics, he also occasionally plays with raggacore legends Pilfers. In addition to being an active musician, he also runs the fledgling record label, Lonely Atom Records, runs the Touring Ska Bands Facebook group (a resource for independent ska bands looking to book their own tours), and curates a Spotify playlist called The Best Ska Bands You've Never Heard Of that spotlights 5 criminally underrated ska bands from all over the world, hoping to shine a spotlight on all of the great ska bands making great music under most people's radars. The playlist is updated every Wednesday!

00:00 - Nathan Leigh & the Crisis Actors - This Machine Kills Centrists (Myths, Conspiracy Theories, and Other Stuff I Made Up To Sound Interesting '20)
01:59 - THE AUTOCRATICS - Brainwashed Friends (the Autocratics '17)
04:42 - Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Perfect Future (2020 Remaster) (TOKYO SKA TREASURES '20)
08:28 - Karikatura - White Lies (Speak Now '16)
12:35 - Tommy Tornado and the Clerks - Downhill (Back on Track '19)
17:04 - Warsaw Poland Bros. - Summer of Ska (Summer of Ska '19)

RJ sez: I added the Tommy Tornado and the Clerks song because, well, I like that band, and this song seemed like it'd be in good company with all the great tracks that Chris chose. There's not too terribly much I can add about Chris that he didn't already cover, but I don't think he mentioned the Lonely Atom Youtube though, so go subscribe to that! I've known Chris for a few years now, he was even a guest on the late Ska After Party and we've kept up with each other via social media all this while. We've actually verified that we've been at shows at the same time, but that was well before we got in touch with each other. So this wraps up the Convoy series. It was a lot of fun these last 7 weeks, and it went so smoothly and brought so much good stuff to the show I'm fixing to find a way to do it all over again. If I'm lucky, I'll find another talented batch of folks to collaborate with!

Hey, guys! This is SKA BOX- an all ska subscription box, sending music, merch and more- straight to your door. Bringing you great ska bands, brands, and labels from around the world.

SKA BOX is owned and ran by Cassie and Becky. Made for ska fans by ska fans, boxes are curated each month to fit various themes.  Boxes come with 5+ items, such as stickers, download codes, CDs, pins, etc., and always include a t-shirt and music. The most recent box was Women in Ska, highlighting women in the ska scene- including artists, musicians, and vocalists. The next box will be the Ska Parade Tour box, highlighting Tazy's 30th Anniversary Tour, the Ska Movie Bluray Release Party, and the great bands that were part of the tour.

Boxes are $35 a month, with free domestic shipping. One-time purchases are also available. The order deadline is the 5th of each month. Boxes ship the 15th of each month.

Song Selection:

Soul Ska- Propaganda
Soul Ska was in our most recent box. They are a super soulful, rocksteady- heavy band from the Bay Area in California. "Propaganda" is a fierce, politically-charged dance tune. It's one of our favorite songs right now.

The Classy Wrecks- Northern Reggae
"Northern Reggae" is a smooth rocksteady jam from The Classy Wrecks out of Ontario. This is one of our favorite songs from The Classy Wrecks. We love the relaxed reggae, rocksteady vibe.

The Rough Customers- Bounce
The Rough Customers were also in our most recent box! Did someone say ska from Kentucky?! These guys are high-energy female-fronted ska-punk. We are big fans of their style. "Bounce" has fun, catchy lyrics and brings an awesome girl-power vibe.

Courtesy of Tim- Where's Ken?
These guys have the greatest energy. Super fun, skank-your-ass off ska-punk from Wisconsin! "Where's Ken?" is a fast-paced punk-laden song full of horns, and it makes us miss shows.

Flip The Switch- I'm So Over It
We're big fans of Flip The Switch! They are phenomenal live. They are a feel-good band, with a heavy punk rock/third-wave influence that makes us want to dance! "I'm So Over It" is our go-to song from these guys.

00:00 - Soul Ska - Propaganda (Propaganda '18)
04:38 - the Classy Wrecks - Nothern Reggae (Bedrocksteady '18)
08:06 - the Rough Customers - Bounce (a Fool's Endeavor '18)
12:00 - Raise the Kicks - (It's Not Another) Pretty Little Love Song (the Debut '18)
15:29 - Courtesy of Tim - Where's Ken? (Here's the Thing, Winnie '19)
17:55 - Flip the Switch - I'm so Over it (Snap-Crackle-Ska! '05)
19:51 - Lumpy - the Other Side (the Other Side '20)

RJ sez: Cassie and Becky really know their stuff and their Ska Box is a real easy and fun way to get some swell ska swag and music! If you can't tell by their run down, I picked the Raise the Kicks and Lumpy song. The Raise the Kicks song just seemed to be fitting the vibe these women were laying out, and that band doesn't get enough coverage. The song from Lumpy is a new one, and I love it! So I hope you do too!

RJ sez: Jr Ska Boss sent me a killer line up for this episode, witched I goosed with tracks from the Dendrites and the Sheldons to send it over the top. It's easy to do when I'm starting with quality picks. See, Jr Ska Boss is not just a DJ over at Viva Ska Radio, and he just doesn't DJ at shows between acts, no no no, he's also a full-on show promoter! I got a chance to meet him at a show he DJ'd a few months ago, and we got on great. I complimented his choices throughout the night and it was some fun conversation, then I was like "Oh, I do a ska podcast" and when I told him the show he seemed super stoked. It was a great moment, and from our latest texts he's expressed that he's honored to contribute to the episode, and well, I have to say, I'm honored that he took the time to collaborate with me.

April 02, 2020 02:00 AM PDT

With all of the craziness surrounding the global COVID-19 pandemic, I've found myself listening to a lot more ska. It's hard to put my finger on why, but I'd liken it to my favorite type of comfort food: not only is it good for the soul but it provides a bit of certainty in these uncertain times. To that end, I picked out a few upbeat tunes that I'm hoping will help provide at least a small distraction. Stay safe out there, and keep washing your hands!

00:00 - the KING LION - Skatman (Blank '19)
03:06 - the Kubricks - Criminals (Criminals '20)
05:51 - Roland Alphonso w/ the Skatalites feat. Don Drummond - Nimble Foot (Nimble Foot / Love is Stronger '65)
08:53 - the Radiation Kings - Murder (Early Years '99)
13:19 - Deal's Gone Bad - Be Mine Tonight (Guide to Boat Drinks & Cruise Cocktails '02)
17:19 - North East Ska Jazz Orchestra - Hard Man fe Dead (Stompin' & Rollin' '15)
20:55 - the Operators - 6 Month Blues (Ain't it Obvious / 6 Month Blues '19)

RJ sez: Jim is one half of the very excellent Windy City Sound System, which you should totally have checked out by now! Building on Jim's picks, I added the new single from the Kubricks and the closing track from the Operators. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and his WCSS co-star at the Jump Up Records 25th Anniversary show a few years back, and I couldn’t be happier then, and I couldn’t be happier now that they’re still in the game creating their show! Give it up for the Windy City Sound System!

Wash, wash
Washing my troubles away
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Maybe these words ring hollow in our troubled times. Or maybe they hit just right. Either way, I hope the potent mixture of 2 Tone, ska-punk, and Jamaican ska that follows finds your ears well. Within this mix, you’ll find five tunes from four different countries — a reminder that it’s not just COVID-19 that has gone global!

00:00 - the Crombies - Wash Wash (Dance Crazee '16)
03:22 - Justin Hinds & the Dominoes - Over the River (Over the River / Corner Stone '64)
05:39 - Lxs Fama - la Reina del Desastre (No Caben más Locos '20)
08:55 - the Bionic Rats - New Day Rudie (T.B.R. '16)
11:41 - the Cabrians - Time Map (Sun & Shadow Heroes '16)
15:14 - the Holophonics - Escape Velocity (Phantom Arrival '18)
17:24 - Beat the Smart Kids - Emoticons (Broke Again '16)
19:55 - the Swashbuckling Doctors - Better Than Nothing (Better Than Nothing '20)

RJ sez: Kevin is one half of the very excellent Windy City Sound System, which is kind of a must-listen podcast! Building on Kevin's picks, I added the Lxs Fama, Holophonics and Swashbuckling Doctors tracks his already killer line up (and in doing so adding another country to the previous count.) I had the pleasure of meeting Keven and his WCSS co-star at the Jump Up Records 25th Anniversary show a few years back, and I couldn't be happier then, and I couldn't be happier now that they're still in the game creating their show! Cheers to the Windy City Sound System!

take it with you

Iphone_trans Listening to podcasts on your mobile devices is extremely convenient -- and it's what makes the podcasting medium so powerful.

You can take your favorite shows and mixes with you anywhere, but to do so requires some quick and simple steps.

Let's walk you through that process together.
step 1:

Click the "Subscribe With iTunes" link in the page's sidebar:

Subscribe_with_itunes

This will require that you have the iTunes software on your computer.

(You can download iTunes here.)
step 2:
Itunes_ss

Now that you've subscribed to the podcast on iTunes, the feed will display in your "Podcasts" section on the left navigation bar.

Click there and you'll see the show displayed in the iTunes browser.

You can "get all" to download all available episodes or just individual episodes.
step 3:

Plug your mobile device (iPhone, iPad, iPod) into your computer with the Dock Connector cable, and click the device in iTunes's left navigation bar.

Itunes_ss2

Once you have your device highlighted, click "Podcasts" in the top navigation bar and sync the podcasts you want on your device. Click "apply" and the episodes you have downloaded on your iTunes software will sync with your device.
that's it!

The beauty of this process is that now, every new episode of your subscribed podcasts will automatically sync to your device every time you plug it in and open iTunes. You can now take your favorite shows with you everywhere you go.

Enjoy!
done!
